Eight Maya Kaqchikel ladies, who live on the shores of the magnificent Lake Atitlan, have formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Tzununa”. They are in their 4th loan cycle with KIVA. The ladies will use the capital to invest in their businesses that include the sale of fruit & corn, traditional textile production, as well as animal husbandry (chickens). The ladies feel very supported by the loans and the monthly educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program (loans + education) of the organization. These trainings help them with their business management (planning, budgeting, savings), their families (nutrition, hygiene) & themselves (self-esteem, sexual & reproductive health).
Maria is a member of the group. She is 22 years old, lives with her parents & has a 6th grade education. She is a seamstress & makes beautiful traditional textiles in the designs of her community. Maria embroiders these textiles, typically blouses or “huipiles”, and woven wrap around tube skirts called “cortes”. She is requesting a loan to buy fabric & thread, as well as a sewing machine! Maria is really hopeful that she will be able to stretch her loan to buy all three!
The ladies send their thanks to KIVA investors from all parts of the world for their kindness & generosity in funding their much needed loans!
