A loan helped to finish upgrading an alpaca fiber plant, creating jobs for local women and increased income in rural Peru.

Suritex's story

In October, Kiva members helped Suritex purchase solar panels to power its processing facilities (Campaign1). Since then, Suritex installed panels and started upgrading the plant. Alpaqueros have seen these improvements over several visits and are thrilled to have a partner that provides such better conditions. However, to have the expanded plant operating fully, Suritex is seeking a complementary loan.

Your loan will help:

1. Purchase and install equipment, wiring and water systems to support increased processing capacity;

2. Finish upgrading the facilities with new lighting and heating to expand production and increase beneficiaries.

This will allow Suritex to multiply its sales by 2.5x and improve the lives of 25,000 people over the next five years - providing a way out of poverty through a dignified and reliable source of income.

Suritex in a nutshell

Problem: Around 170,000 families in Peru are small- and medium-sized producers of alpaca fiber. Many are unable to generate enough income to support their families and live in extreme poverty.

Impact: Through solar-powered technology processing costs of fiber are lowered providing savings that are passed on to alpaqueros through a fair market price. On average, each community sees US$6,000 of additional income per month.

Further Impact: Low-income women from the communities are trained in processing, knitting and manufacturing, receiving a fair compensation for their work. Suritex employs 36 women in Huancayo.

This loan is special because:

It supports businesses that are too big for microfinance but too small for banks.
