The “Microcredit Plus” Program of Friendship Bridge, that combines small loans and educational training, is an effective vehicle for seven women who formed the Trust Bank “Bella Luna” or “Beautiful Moon”. These Maya K’iche ladies are beginning their second loan cycle with Kiva and their businesses range from traditional textile production and sales (elaborate, colorful blouses called “huipiles”) to animal husbandry (chickens, turkeys, pigs, cattle).
Juana is single, 20 years old, and a member of the group. She feels fortunate to be in the eleventh grade with a goal to complete her education. She works diligently at her traditional textile business, embroidering beautiful designs on her pretty “huipiles”. She is requesting a loan to buy a variety of fabric and colorful thread. Juana wants her business to expand and create more income so that she can save and invest.
The ladies look forward to their monthly meetings as they have a lot in common - sharing stories and dreams. They report that the educational trainings, conducted by a facilitator from Friendship Bridge, are critical for their personal development and their health, supporting families and improving business outcomes.
Friendship Bridge partners, like Kiva investors, are so important in the lives of these ladies. Thank you for your generosity!
