John's story

I've always loved books and book stores, even before I knew that independent bookshops existed. As a kid, I would spend trips to the mall in Waldenbooks, searching the shelves for the next book to devour. I was an insatiable reader, filling every inch of my shelves and always carrying at least one book in my backpack.

This love of books and writing eventually led to me attending Temple University for my MFA in fiction. While there, I began working in the library's rare books department, learning how to sort and evaluate books and finding unexpected treasures in donated collections.

At the same time, I started working for a friend's bookstore in Philadelphia, where I began to realize that I could use my knowledge and enthusiasm about books to create and sustain a business. There's nothing I enjoy more than connecting with customers to find out what kinds of books they love, and helping them find their next favorite book.

When I moved to Pittsburgh in 2012, I knew I wanted to open a bookstore here, and I’ve now found the perfect location. My dream is to make the bookstore a place for the community to gather for readings and events, and a space to find the perfect book.

This loan is special because:

It helps a new independent book store enriching a local community in Pittsburgh
