Nellie Stokeld is the President & Queen of The Pie Shop, a second-generation family business specializing in British pies and baked goods. Nellie moved to Oakland in 2012 and fell in love with entrepreneurship at the Women's Initiative for Self-Employment where she witnessed women from all ages and backgrounds find their inner fire and take the steps to turn their dreams into businesses. It was in Oakland where Nellie noticed a lack of British food and longed for the comfort food of her youth: a British pasty. And it struck Nellie that it was her calling to start Oakland's first British pasty company, The Pie Shop. Nellie enlisted the help of her rambunctious father to teach her the family's secret recipe for fillings and crust that he spent 50 years developing. In addition to family favorites, Nellie is also experimenting with fresh new pasty flavors such as chicken tikka masala and cheeseburger to complement the traditional pasty fillings such as Cornish and chicken & mushroom.
Nellie grew up in Santa Rosa, California and fondly remembers spending her formative years in her parent's restaurant, an English pub & tea room where British pasties were her family's specialty. The youngest of four siblings and the only girl of the bunch, Nellie helped out how ever she could in the family pub. Her parent's would put on amateur theater hour and Nellie would assist the actors with their lines or make whipped cream for her mother's trifle. It was only after college that Nellie discovered her calling as her family's next generation of British pasty makers.
Nellie currently distributes her delicious pies to various craft breweries in the Bay Area, participates in festivals and pop-ups, and caters office parties and private gatherings. With a nod to English heritage (and humor), The Pie Shop is committed to the craft of British baking and creating a work environment that celebrates individuality and imagination.

When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
