A loan helped to buy seeds and start farming so that she can provide a better life for her two children.

Grace's story

Grace (pictured above in her house) is a 39-year-old woman from a remote village in the Kerugoya area of Kenya. She is a very hardworking person. Thanks to her daily effort, she has managed to give her two children a good start by providing them with a good quality education.

Grace’s primary sources of income are crops and animal farming. She also earns some income from a personal business. She never had formal education and is content with the farming lifestyle.

The Kerugoya area is a favorable area for farming, so she is seeking a loan to buy seeds to enable her to grow more vegetables, reap maximum profits, and increase her business.

Being a woman and accessing funds in Kenya, especially the Kerugoya area, is very challenging, but Grace feels relieved knowing there are institutions such as Kiva that help enterprising women like her. Her goal is to improve her living conditions and secure the future of her children. Her biggest dreams are to be able to support her family by herself, to become independent, and to buy a home.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens and farming equipment.
