The five members of the group La Excelencia en Cristo (Excellence in Christ) live and work in a type of community called a batey. Located in the middle of vast sugarcane fields, lives often revolve around the cycle of the crop, with money flowing into the community during the harvest season, and experiencing difficult times during the dead season. In hopes of improving their quality of life and balancing out the highs and lows of the seasons, Milta and her group have chosen to take out small loans to operate their personal businesses.
Milta, a leader in her group and community, is well known for making delicious sweets and breads. She uses her loan capital to purchase materials such as coconut, flour, sugar, and more so that she can continue making the large batches that she sells in her local community. Milta and her group are well known in the community for being hard workers, often seeking out new opportunities to grow or improve their businesses. Milta travels to the local city of La Romana to sell her sweets and breads. She dreams of owning her own house to keep her family close, safe, and healthy.
