Sara's story

I'm passionate about food – food that supports small farmers, encourages biodiversity, promotes health and is delicious.

I'm originally from Montana and grew up around agriculture. After studying at the University of Notre Dame, I worked on agricultural and international trade policy in the U.S. Senate. A few years later, I moved to Zimbabwe to work with small farmers after the collapse of commercial farming. While I was in Zimbabwe, I learned about new, amazing foods I had never heard of – many wild harvested – that had the potential to provide income to farmers, had amazing nutritional profiles and if harvested in the right way could help conservation efforts.

My favorite was the Baobab fruit from the majestic Baobab tree, a tree that is often hundreds, if not thousands, of years old and looks like it's been ripped out of the ground and turned upside down. I founded Bumbleroot to tell the story of the Baobab fruit and its harvesters and to create new, healthy products that we can use to enhance our health and vitality. As Bumbleroot grows, we will tell the stories of other foods and the people who harvest and grow them.

Today, I split my time between San Francisco, Colorado and Montana, introducing Bumbleroot and Baobab to as many people as I can!
