Leon's story

I’m an ex-offender who was born and raised in Flint, Michigan where I’ve resided for 32 years. During the late 90’s and the early 2000’s I made a living participating in the sale of illegal drugs. This led me to having no motivation and a lousy education, which influenced me to stay involved in these street related activities for some time. After being betrayed by those who I was associated with, I was shot in the head and robbed. This life alerting experience left me paranoid and numb to friendship. I began keeping a weapon on me at all times and sleeping with a firearm by my bedside, and this lifestyle continued until I was arrested during a drug deal and sentenced to serve 12 to 20 years in prison. It was during my incarceration that I began to seek atonement for my lifestyle through faith and a re-evaluation of my life. I began to recondition myself, and due to my participation in self improvement programs such as life skills attainment, anger management, conflict resolution, racial diversity, and a warden’s forum similar to city council – I’ve grown tremendously. I recognized the need to change and that change had to come directly from me. I have become very passionate about change and it has reflected upon my action and behavior today. I'm very involved in my community by helping at risk teens and returning citizens coming back into community using my maintenance business as means to help in a community plagued by drugs, violence and crime. Since my release, I have been actively involved in furthering my education at a community college, completed green construction training, joined the Democratic Party and I now serve on the master planning committee in Flint.
