A farmer living in Battambang province, Phalla is 45 years old. She is a mother who has five children; only two of them are in school. She is struggling to earn income to support her daily living through rice farming, which has been the main source of income for around 12 years. Besides rice farming, she also sells fish at the local market because her husband is an angler. She is able to save up to 37,000 KHR each day for emergency needs. Due to lack of water supply, she got low crop yields in these years and this is the main challenge for her business.
She is an old borrower with VisionFund because this is the tenth loan cycle for her. Because of those loans, she can support her business and send her children to school. After she paid back all those loans, she decided to form a new group which has two members. Phalla, who is the leader of the group, will spend her loan portion to buy fertilizer, seed, and to pay for plowing fee to support her rice business; and she will use some remaining portion to buy fishing tools to support her husband's business. In the future, she hopes to earn more income to expand her business and keep her children in school as well.
