A loan helped to buy four ovens to increase his production of charcoal briquettes.

Jose Silverio's story

Jose Silverio (shown here with one of our loan officers) is a 46-year-old resident of Noh-Bec, a community that manages a communal forest territory. They have 18,000 hectares of FSC-certified forest, where they harvest various tree species, collect latex used as natural gum base and produce sustainable charcoal. He is part of a group of charcoal producers engaged in sustainable forest management activities with Reforestamos Mexico AC, an NGO that works with diverse stakeholders to ensure the forests Mexico needs for its development.

Jose Silverio is asking for a loan to increase his production of charcoal briquettes. He owns three ovens where he produces 90 tons of charcoal from dead trees and sawmill residues. With this loan, Jose Silverio will buy four new ovens and hire someone to help him with the additional production.

As a result, he will earn more money, improve the living conditions of his family, and — by using dead trees to produce charcoal briquettes — he will help prevent wildfires and thus contribute to the conservation of this invaluable site.
