Sonali's story

In 2010, Sonali started Mela Artisans to support under-employed artisans in India and promote their craftsmanship globally. Sonali and the Mela Artisans team works closely with artisans who create high-quality products, promoting social uplift in their communities.

Sonali traveled frequently to India as a child to visit her grandmother, volunteer, and explore the country. She was amazed by the sheer number of regional crafts, which were unique and beautiful. But, the artisans who made them were struggling. No longer able to earn a living wage, an increasing number of master craftsmen were forced to give up their craft in exchange for a life of abject poverty as unskilled workers. These concerns became a call to action, leading Sonali to found Mela Artisans. Since 2012, Sonali has placed orders with more than 50 artisan groups across 10 states, more than 3/4 of which are women.

In 2015, Sonali took on her first Kiva loan to expand the line of Mela Artisans products to include embroidered pillows and increase jobs for artisans in India. The loan was able to reach and support more artisans, securing the resources for additional training and new materials. With her second Kiva loan, Sonali will support hand weavers in Erode, India. By working with these artisans, Sonali will support their craft, help them retain a livelihood, and improve their skillset. Most importantly, she hopes to give these artisans a steady source of impact and help keep their businesses alive.

This loan is special because:
