A loan helped fishing supplies such as rope, nets, weights and floats, and nylon line.

Lucinda's story

Lucinda A. lives in the municipality of Bugasong in beautiful Antique Province. Antique is a coastal, mountainous province on the west side of the island of Panay; its economy is heavily dependent on fishing and farming. Lucinda is 65 years old and is married to Salvador, who is a farmer. They do not have any children.

Lucinda started her business selling dried saltfish and shrimp paste at market only recently. She found initial support for her endeavor when she became a member of Kiva partner Ahon Sa Hirap, Inc. (ASHI) in 2008, and is now on her second loan cycle.

She plans to use the proceeds of this loan to buy more fishing materials, including rope, nets, floats and weights, and nylon line. Lucinda processes the fish she catches, drying them for sale at public market.

She hopes to generate enough income from her business to be able to help support her nephews' education. She also wants to save money in order to be financially stable when she and her husband are no longer able to work. Lucinda's ambition will help her achieve these goals: she wants to buy a motorized fishing boat some day, and plans to further expand her fishing operation.
