Miriam is a craftswoman who learned this art at the age of nine, which her mother taught her and whose family tradition has been maintained with the passage of time. She has done this work for many years and she generates additional income to contribute to the family budget. She makes backpacks, handbags, blouses, hammocks, and everything her customers order from her. When she arrived in Cartagena de Indias she chose this work because she wanted to be an independent businesswoman and this work is very relaxing and she wants to show her talent, since she believes that craftsmanship is a special gift, which is very good for other people to know, appreciate, and enjoy.
She works daily from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm and markets her products through acquaintances in the neighborhood in which she resides. Through the Fundación Mario Santo Domingo she is currently applying for her first Kiva loan, resources that she will invest in the purchase of raw materials such as threads, pins, and buttons, in oder to expand her production and diversify her products, by which she hopes to see an increase in her sales and therefore her profits. Her goal is to retain customers with good products and services, to strengthen her business in a way that it will grow enough for her to be able to export and improve her quality of life. Her main goal is that her children become professionals and to have her own home.
