Removing barriers to finance is key to helping climate-vulnerable people navigate the effects of climate change.

Kiva helps climate-vulnerable communities build sustainable livelihoods through climate-smart finance.

Climate-smart finance refers to investments and other financial services — like Kiva loans — that mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and/or help underserved populations build resilience and adapt to the risks and impact of climate change.

Increasing resilience and income for the most at-risk people

Smallholder farmers are on the front lines of climate change. Changing weather patterns leave them susceptible to huge shocks — and the possibility of having to leave everything behind to seek better land and opportunities. We’re dedicated to providing the financial resources farmers and small business owners need to adapt to the changing climate and maintain a sustainable livelihood.

Access to climate-smart loans and financial services like crop insurance helps smallholder farmers grow their income, withstand climate-related shocks, and remain in their homes.

Kiva has funded $59M in loans supporting climate resilience.

Those loans have supported people like Musa, a farmer in Uganda who used his Kiva loan to increase his crop yield, all while reducing his environmental impact through sustainable farming practices.

Supporting the growth of renewable energy companies

Countless small and mid-sized businesses are denied the funding they need to grow — too big for microfinance loans, yet too small for traditional bank loans. Many of these companies work with renewable energy to mitigate the impacts of climate change by reducing CO2 emissions. With proper support, these businesses can scale and help slow the effects of a warming planet.

We facilitate loans to businesses that are making a real impact on mitigating climate change and providing clean energy products to climate-vulnerable communities.

Kiva has funded $37M in climate mitigation, 85% of which has been financing for solar energy companies serving low-income customers.

d.light has helped put solar-powered lanterns, cookstoves, and more into the homes of over 100 million people. With the help of Kiva loans, they’re looking to transform one billion lives by 2030.

Strengthening livelihoods for sustainable small business owners

Innovative entrepreneurs are motivated to make sustainable changes, but don't have access to the funds they need to start or grow their businesses. Lowering the barrier to financial services can help ethical small business owners scale while making sustainable changes that benefit their communities — and the world.

Kiva facilitates new investment into eco-friendly small businesses and provides capacity building support to help them improve their sustainable practices.
