Does the world care about you?

I guess that depends on what our understanding of the “world” is. Some have a limited view of the world and others very broad. For example, during love scenes in movies and mimicked exactly by viewers in real life, one partner looks into the eyes of another and romantically states, “you are my world”. Most watching the movie usually take a deep breath and release a longing sigh at the seeming beauty of the sentiment, though logically or practically speaking I have no idea what this means.

While we go around looking for that one person who can be our “world”, we sometimes forget that there is a “real world” out there as well, and by doing so limit our opportunity and potential to give and receive love.

There are many ways we can start a love affair with the “real world”; through simply smiling and speaking to people to get to know them, volunteering for organizations, teaching, healing, feeding, lending, supporting are all ways we can express love. For example, I’ve recently become a Kiva Fellow as my way of giving “Kiva Love” to Kiva partners, and borrowers by visiting them, getting to know them and understanding how I can help “Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control” the processes that can place needed resources into the hands of Kiva borrowers. Creating this connection between Kiva partners, lenders and borrowers is my way of starting a “love affair”.

Instead of waiting for love to miraculously come to us, we need to reach out and first and foremost make ourselves lovable. This is usually accomplished by doing unto others what we would have them do unto us. It’s simpler than we sometimes think.

Getting back to the original question, “does the world care about you” the answer may come in the form of another question, “do you care about the world”?

You’re a click away from making a difference.
