Jerusalen Ii Group's story
Thirty-three year old Luciana is a married mother of two children who are eleven and fourteen years old. They are in the fifth and eighth grades. Luciana has a sixth grade education. She was unable to continue her education because she lived far from a school. Her husband works in a convenience store. Luciana raises chickens, turkeys and pigs that she sells from her home and the local market. Her children help her care for them. Her goal is to enlarge her business. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy more chickens, turkeys and pigs.
Luciana joined six other Maya K’iche women and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Jerusalen II”. These ladies buy/sell colorful traditional textiles, manage convenience stores, sell regional snack foods and have convenience stores. They live in the department/state of Quiche. They learn a great deal from monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Recent topics for the training have been about savings and effective investing. Other topics are drawn from four areas: health, women’s issues, family matters and business. Every other month, they have access to basic health care services that include consults, exams and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for helping these women help themselves! They are taking steps toward more successful and prosperous futures!
