Mana Del Cielo Group

Mana Del Cielo Group's story

Raising animals is a profitable and sustainable enterprise, especially in rural areas of the department/state of Quiché where Candelaria has lived for 46 years. For this reason, twenty years ago she started raising pigs and chickens which she sells from her home. To diversify her income, a year ago Candelaria began selling tortillas in the capital city in a rented location. Additionally, she sells tamales on Tuesdays and Thursdays on the street. Candelaria is married to an bricklayer, and has seven children, 7 to 30 years old. The youngest is in first grade. The older children reached sixth grade. Three of them are married, and she is the grandmother of 7 grandchildren. Due to the high demand for tortillas, her daughter and one employee help serve the clientele. She wants to open a second tortilleria location to meet new demands. For this reason, she is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy corn, gas and a griddle.

The other Mayan women of K’iche del Banco Comunal de Puente de Amistad “Mana Del Cielo”, plan to invest capital in their businesses selling traditional clothing, tamales, raising animals, convenience stores, and tortillería. These women receive training as part of Puente de Amistad's “Microcrédito Plus” program where they learn about business, education, family and women. Additionally, they receive a bimonthly visit from a nurse who offers all types of medical health services.
