A loan of $15,000 helps this Oakland-based underserved-youth rock climbing gym (& 2-time Kiva borrower!) build new climbing walls.

Alexander's story
As the founder of Oaktown Boulders, my story mirrors that of many students we serve. Born to refugee parents in Oakland, I grew up with limited opportunities due to socioeconomic challenges. It wasn't until college that I discovered rock climbing—a sport that opened my eyes to a world of possibilities and provided a sense of belonging I'd never experienced before.
Returning to Oakland after graduation, I noticed a stark disparity in local climbing gyms. They catered primarily to affluent families, failing to reflect the diversity of our community. This realization sparked the vision for Oaktown Boulders—a gym dedicated to introducing Oakland's youth to the transformative power of climbing, regardless of their background or financial means.
Our mission is personal. It's about creating the safe space and opportunities I wish I had as a child. It's about showing our youth that they belong, that they can overcome challenges, and that their potential is limitless.
