Las Golondrinas Group's story

Enterprising women like Rosa (43 years old) generate their own income and are achieving success. She is married to a bricklayer and is the mother of four children (12 to 20 years old), one of whom died three years ago from an illness. Two sons are in sixth grade and high school. The oldest has a bachelor's degree in science and literature. Rosa only went to school through sixth grade.

For fifteen years she has raised organic chickens which she sells in the local market. Nine years ago Rosa started a second business, selling delicious snacks. She sells them door to door two mornings a week. She shares that her clientele is increasing and she fulfills many orders.

Rosa requests her fifth Kiva loan to buy corn, tomatoes, spices and rice in bulk. She wants to keep her business stable in the future and continue to support her children's education.

Rosa is the president of the community bank Banco Comunal de Puente de Amistad “Las Golondrinas” along with six other Maya Kaqchikel women, who live in the Department/State of Sololá. They sell chicken by the pound, corn tortillas, snacks. Other women have convenience stores and raise organic chickens. Each month they attend short talks thanks to Puente de Amistad's “Microcredit Plus” program. The topics related to over-indebtedness and prevention of women's diseases are very important for the women and benefit them in different areas of their lives.

Thank you, Kiva lender.
