Abubakar

Abubakar's story

Abubakar is a maize farmer, aged 57, in the rural area of Kaduna, a state in northern Nigeria where he lives with his wife and 6 children. Maize farming is the primary occupation within his community and, like many other farmers in his community, the income he earns from cultivating is not sustainable enough to enhance the standard of living of his family.

With Babban Gona, he will get access to high-quality inputs and increased farming services that will enable him to increase his yields. Abubakar will be able to farm more sustainably as a result of training programs. His fertilizer training, for example, will focus on micro-dosing fertilizers to reduce their environmental impact whilst increasing yields. Abubakar anticipates 40 bags/hectare from this year's harvest, which is double the national Nigerian average of 20bags/hectare. Abubakar is requesting a loan to buy better-yielding seeds, fertilizers, and other important agricultural inputs that will improve his farming operations and boost his yield, enabling him to generate earnings of up to two times the average Nigerian farmer's annual income.

Abubakar plans to use the profits he earns from his harvest to buy more nutritious foods for him and his family and send all his children to school.
